A customer walked into our Nehrunagar branch last month holding her phone up, showing our optometrist a pair of glasses she'd seen on Instagram. "I want these exactly." He tried them on her, and honestly, they just didn't work. Too round for a round face, sat wrong on her nose. She left with a rectangular pair instead and came back two weeks later to say people kept asking where she got her glasses. That's the whole point of this guide, really. What looks good on a model or an influencer isn't automatically going to look good on you, because faces aren't interchangeable and frames aren't one-size-fits-all-looks-good.
We've been fitting faces in Ahmedabad since 1991, so this isn't a theory for us. It's mostly just things we've noticed after doing it a few thousand times.
First, Which Shape Are You Actually?
Pull your hair off your face, look straight into a mirror, and be honest with yourself. Most people land somewhere close to one of these, even if it's not a perfect match:
- Round: cheeks are the widest part, jaw is soft, and width and length are close to equal.
- Oval: a little longer than it is wide, jaw narrower than the forehead, generally the easiest face to shop for.
- Square: strong jawline, broad forehead, more angles than curves.
- Heart: forehead wider than the chin, which tapers to a point.
- Oblong: longer overall, with the forehead and jaw close in width.
If you're stuck between two, don't overthink it. We get people at the counter every week who genuinely can't tell round from the oval on themselves. It's one of those things that's obvious from outside and confusing from the mirror.
What Actually Works for Each One
Round faces need angles, not more curves. A rectangular frame or a browline style breaks up the softness in a way round or tiny frames just can't those tend to repeat the shape instead of balancing it. Worth a look through our men's eyeglasses or women's eyeglasses if this sounds like your face.
Oval faces, frankly, can wear almost anything. Aviators, wayfarers, round frames, sharp geometric shapes it rarely goes wrong. If there's a mistake oval-faced customers make, it's playing it too safe. A Ray-Ban eyeglasses aviator or a bolder Tom Ford spectacle frame both tend to land well here.
Square faces do better softened out. Round or oval frames counter a strong jaw, and cat-eye shapes do something similar with a bit more personality. Steer clear of thick square frames on a square face it just stacks angle on angle. We've seen a fair number of Prada eyeglasses and Gucci spectacle frames rounder styles work nicely for this shape.
Heart faces want the attention pulled downward, away from a wider forehead. Bottom-heavy frames, lighter colours, rimless or semi-rimless styles all of it helps. Oversized frames, on the other hand, tend to overwhelm rather than flatter here.
Oblong faces benefit from frames that are deeper than they're wide, which shortens the face visually. Decorative or contrasting temples add a bit more balance too. Something oversized or wraparound from Versace sunglasses or Giorgio Armani eyeglasses is a decent place to start looking.
Two Things That Trip People Up
Face shape gets all the attention, but skin tone matters more than people expect. Warm undertones generally sit better with gold, tortoise, or brown frames. Cooler undertones lean toward silver, black, or blue. Nobody tells you this at first, and then they wonder why the "correct" frame shape still looks slightly off.
Scale is the other one. A frame can be the textbook right shape and still look wrong if it's sized off for your face too wide, too narrow, sitting too high or low on the nose. This is genuinely hard to judge from a product photo, no matter how good the lighting is.
Same logic carries over to sunglasses, just with tint and UV protection thrown in. Browse men's sunglasses or women's sunglasses with the same shape rules in mind and you're most of the way there.
Still, Come In and Try It On
We could write ten more paragraphs about this and it still wouldn't replace five minutes in front of an actual mirror with the actual frame on your actual face. Screens shift colour. Photos flatten depth. A frame that looked perfect on your phone can sit strangely on your particular nose bridge, and there's no guide that fixes that except trying it.
