Diwali brings diyas, rangoli, sweets, late-night card parties and, of course, fireworks. If you wear contact lenses, the festival also brings smoke, dust, sparks, heavy makeup and long hours that can be hard on your eyes. Here is a simple Diwali contact lens safety guide from the opticians at Laxmi Opticians, so you can enjoy every celebration with clear, comfortable vision.
We have been looking after Ahmedabad's eyes since 1991, and every year after Diwali we see the same problems: red, gritty eyes, lenses worn overnight after a party, and the occasional injury from a cracker. Almost all of them can be avoided with a few habits.
Why Diwali Is Hard on Contact Lens Wearers
Contact lenses sit directly on the surface of your eye, so anything in the air can get trapped underneath them. During Diwali, the air carries far more than usual:
- Smoke and fine particles from fireworks irritate the eyes and can stick to the lens surface.
- Dust and debris from cleaning, decorating and crowded streets can scratch the cornea if trapped under a lens.
- Dry air and late nights reduce your natural tears, so lenses feel tight and uncomfortable.
- Glitter, kajal and eye makeup can flake into the eye and coat the lens.
- Sparks and flying fragments from crackers can cause serious eye injuries, with or without lenses.
10 Diwali Contact Lens Safety Tips
1. Switch to glasses when you burst crackers
This is the most important tip. When you are lighting crackers or standing close to them, take your lenses out and wear your spectacles instead. Glasses give your eyes a physical barrier against smoke, sparks and debris. Better still, keep a safe distance and let one person light the crackers while everyone else watches from afar.
2. Choose daily disposable lenses for the festive week
Daily disposable lenses are ideal for Diwali. You put in a fresh, clean pair every morning and throw it away at night, so smoke, dust and makeup residue never build up. There is no cleaning routine to skip after a late party. If you normally wear monthly lenses, ask us about a box of dailies just for the festive season.
3. Wash and dry your hands before touching your lenses
Diwali hands touch sweets, oil diyas, rangoli colours, playing cards and cracker boxes. Always wash with soap, rinse well and dry with a clean, lint-free towel before you insert or remove your lenses. Gunpowder residue and colour powder in the eye are painful and can cause infection.
4. Put lenses in before makeup, take them out before removing it
Insert your lenses first, then apply makeup. At the end of the night, remove your lenses before you take off your makeup. Avoid loose glitter around the eyes, do not apply kajal or eyeliner on the inner rim of your lower lid, and choose water-resistant, ophthalmologist-tested products.
5. Never sleep in your lenses after a late night
After a long night of celebrations it is tempting to crash with your lenses still in. Sleeping in lenses not approved for overnight wear cuts the oxygen supply to your cornea and greatly increases the risk of serious infection. Keep your lens case and solution by the bed as a reminder.
6. Keep lubricating drops with you
Smoke and dry air make lenses feel scratchy. Carry rewetting drops that are suitable for contact lens wearers and use them as needed. Do not use redness-relief drops with your lenses unless your eye care professional recommends them.
7. Never rinse lenses or cases with tap water
Only use fresh multipurpose solution to clean and store reusable lenses. Tap water, bottled water and saliva are never safe for contact lenses. Replace the solution in your case every day and never top it up.
8. Do not share lenses, especially coloured ones
Coloured contact lenses are popular for festive looks, but they are medical devices, not accessories. Never share them with friends or cousins, and never buy unbranded lenses from street stalls. Wear only lenses fitted for your eyes from a trusted optician.
9. Wear sunglasses or glasses outdoors on smoky days
On days when the air is thick with smoke, a wraparound pair of sunglasses over your lenses reduces how much smoke and dust reaches your eyes when you are travelling or visiting family.
10. Pack a small lens kit
If you are travelling for Diwali or staying out late, carry a lens case, a travel bottle of solution, rewetting drops, a spare pair of lenses and your glasses. Then you can always remove your lenses safely if your eyes start to feel uncomfortable.
What to Do If Something Gets Into Your Eye
- Do not rub your eye. Rubbing can push particles deeper or scratch the cornea.
- Wash your hands, then remove the lens gently if you can do so easily.
- Rinse the eye with clean, running water or sterile saline for several minutes.
- Throw away the lens. Do not put a contaminated lens back in your eye.
- Wear your glasses until your eye feels completely normal.
Firework injury? Go to an eye hospital or emergency room immediately. If a spark, burn or fragment hits your eye, do not rub it, do not try to remove anything stuck in it, and do not apply any ointment or home remedy. Loosely cover the eye with a clean shield or the bottom of a paper cup and get urgent medical help. If a chemical or powder gets in the eye, rinse it with plenty of clean water on the way.
See an eye doctor promptly if you notice pain, redness that does not settle, blurred vision, light sensitivity or discharge after removing your lenses. These can be signs of an infection or a corneal scratch that needs treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wear contact lenses while bursting crackers?
It is safer not to. Smoke and debris can get trapped under the lens, and lenses offer no protection against sparks. Wear glasses when you are near crackers and keep a safe distance.
Are daily disposable lenses better during Diwali?
Yes. A fresh pair every day means no build-up of smoke, dust or makeup, and no cleaning routine to skip after a late night.
What should I do if smoke makes my lenses uncomfortable?
Wash your hands, remove the lenses, rinse your eyes with clean water and switch to glasses. Use lens-friendly rewetting drops, and see an eye doctor if redness or pain continues.
Can I wear coloured contact lenses for Diwali parties?
Yes, if they are branded lenses fitted for your eyes by an optician. Never share coloured lenses or buy unbranded ones, and remove them before sleeping.
What should I do if a firework injures my eye?
Do not rub the eye or try to remove anything stuck in it. Loosely cover it with a clean shield and go to an eye hospital or emergency room immediately.
